Help me understand lightning networks. If 5 people want to send 5 Bitcoin each through a five hop chain of nodes what is the total amount of Bitcoin that is temporarily locked up? 5 or 125 coins?

Does every node need to lock 1 coin for each coin sent through or is 1 coin locked total no matter how many nodes? Or is 1 coin locked then a thousand people could use the nodes to send 1 coin? via /r/Bitcoin http://bit.ly/1KXl0fC
