Do Altcoins have any edge that Bitcoin doesn't? With sidechains all/most altcoins could be tied to Bitcoin so isn't it really cryptocurrency, and not Bitcoin or Altcoin X?

Some people who want to learn about bitcoin are inerested in altcoins but aside from pointing out the difference between the protocols I don't know much what to say. Is there any take away message from alocoins?
