I'm a complete noob to the Mining thing, I have above average computer skills. Help me please? How do I mine for Ripple, RaiBlocks(XRB), and Stellar (XLM)?

I am interested in investing money to mine some of the smaller Alt-coins. I would like any advice I can get from a reputable miner.

What equipment would I need? Should I work in a pool? Any resources that would teach me the best way to mine, best equipment, and how to operate it? If I have basic HTML, CSS, and C++ knowledge, I should be able to do this pretty easily, right? I'm looking to spend $5k or less as I've heard 1k isn't possible, and I have access to free power through my apartment complex.
