New to electrum. Can I throw away my seed?

I don't want to remember/store both my password and my seed. If I store it somewhere, I'm worried that a badguy can find it and jack my coins.I don't, however, understand what the seed does. Do I need it? via /r/Bitcoin http://bit.ly/1WAJVhT
