This is an important point because I think many still have the misconception that Lightning will be some kind of client-server model requiring significant amounts of trust. In fact, it will be more like a peer-to-peer network using the original idea of Ripple where debts can cancel each other out. This means you can save a lot of transactions.
It's actually quite similar to how the banking system works today, except that far less trust is required. The actual Bitcoin transactions would be settlement layer in this system.
