Every single bitcoin exchange wants too much information.

Ive been looking around now for a small amount of bitcoin - but everywhere I go I get asked for ID and proof of residence. Even private traders on localbitcoins want copies of my bills and such. I don't really understand why Bitcoin is supposed to be this great anonymous currency but I have to hand over so much information - and also do these guys REALLY think Im going to send copies of my drivers license and bills? Im more worried about someone stealing my identity that I ever would be about someone stealing 50 bucks of digital currency from me - I have serious trust issues towards bitcoin exchanges and such: I would hesitate even to send my bank this kind of info. Whats the deal?
