Trojan Issue with NiceHash?

Just had a Trojan alert pop up on my anti-virus for the xmr-stak-cpu file. I made sure to scan it a few times before and after installing it and it came up clean. Is this just a false positive result or something picked up by connecting to a pool?

New to Bitcoin mining!

Hello everyone I am recently new to the bitcoin scene. Looking into it and reading a lot here on the forums I have seen that mining in itself is not really profitable, however, I would like to do so just to gain the experience! I am currently looking at getting a miner and setting it up via raspberry pi 3. I have scoured the internet looking for something in my price range that isn't awful. I have found the AntMiner S3 ~200$ USD. I have recently been looking into just buying a hash board and running it with that as well. I am in general looking for information on the best way to get started some better setups etc... Anything would be great!

Bitcoin mining safe?

Hello, So, I heard from family that bitcoin mining is not a safe option in any way, but they do not have any proof or evidence supporting their rebuttal. Now, I want you guys to tell me, is this a viable way to make some money? Time Frame: 1-2 years, Miner: Antminer S9 , Power Cost: 0.178 W. Now, aside from pool costs, current calculations say 15 dollars a day (Oct 31, 2017) and 5,600 Dollars a year. Now, this is from 14 TH/s. The thing is, if prices and difficulty of mining bitcoin change to the point where it isnt profitable anymore, I could just resell the miner and get my money back if I decide I dont want to mine anymore. Now, I think that this is considered safe but no one thinks the same thing. What I want here is proof that this is a viable option and is safe. I want to prove my family wrong and that this is a viable option. It would be helpful is experienced people can give me their opinion on this. Thanks!

Can you mine while connected to the Bitcoin network via SPV client?

I know solo miners typically connect via full nodes.

Pool miners typically report to a pool admin who maintain a full node.

I've heard that people can mine with an SPV client but was wondering if this is true?

Are there other ways to connect to the Bitcoin network?

New to mining, but have access to very cheap power

Hi All,

I have access to very cheap power (about 2MW) and would like to set up a mining operation. I'm very familiar with crypto, but have never mined before. Few questions...

  • What would be the best way to get up and running quickly? Partnership? Or can I do this on my own?

  • I'd like to mine BTC, but am open to Alt was well. What's the best way to procure the miners?

Thanks!

Genesis and Hashflare cloud mining questions.

First off, has anyone used these services before? I’m running them both at the moment. Even if they’re both scams, I’ve only lost about $35 at worst. So not much damage done.

Secondly, after I buy hash power, does the mining begin automatically? Is there a way I can watch or review my progress? I feel like there should be a monitoring page or something of the sort. Does it just mine autonomously?

Owning 1 bitcoin is like owning 17 pounds of gold

Bitcoin was intentionally designed to mimic the properties of gold and is often, correctly, compared to that asset.

So, I did the math and if you consider all of the reported gold in the world and divide by 21 million, you come up with 17 pounds. Meaning if you want to own the same percentage share of gold as one bitcoin represents it is that quantity.

@see: http://bit.ly/2yZb0Y3

If you managed to accumulate about 130 bitcoin, that's the same percentage share as one metric ton of gold. (If bitcoin ever reached the market cap of gold, then 130 bitcoin would equal the value of one metric ton of gold; or about 45 million dollars).

It's a neat way to think about just how rare a bitcoin is.

Calculated probability of solo mining October 31, 2017 (spoiler: my math is likely wrong, but it's close enough)

I was attempting to explain mining to my girlfriend, and I came up with these numbers. Probably wrong, but meh, sounds good enough.

Current network hashrate last night at midnight (12:00am, October 31st, 2017) is a whopping 11,600~ PH/s. Think about that. I had to look up what word that translates to. If TH/s is a trillion, then PH/s is a quadrillion. Alright, then 11,600 quadrillions would be 11.6 quintillions.

There are roughly 11.6 quintillion hashes a second of mining power on the Bitcoin Blockchain.

The hashing power of a single Antminer S9 (if you get a good batch) is about 14 TH/s.

Math it out: 14,000,000,000,000 (fourteen trillion) / 11,600,000,000,000,000,000 = ~0.0000012% chance that a single Antminer S9 of successfully solo mining a block on the Bitcoin Blockchain.

Math it out some more, move the zeros over and come up with a ratio, that comes out to being roughly 1:1 million chance.

One in a million? Well shit that doesn't sound so bad, right?

Wrong.

(This is where I know my math is a bit off, but I'm too lazy to do better from here because it's at least close enough. Maybe somebody can correct me if they want to do the math better after here.)

Quite literally one in a million odds, per individual hash, that it will be the one to crack a block. Think about that in terms of days.

1 in 1mil days odds.

1 million days = 2739.72603 years.

So using super ridiculously rough math here, I estimate that with a single Antminer S9, if you started mining from last night at midnight, then at some unknown point in time during the next ~2740 years you would solo mine a block on the Bitcoin Blockchain (and that's IF the network hashrate didn't change at all).

Even with my lazy math, hopefully this estimation will help to minimize the amount of bothersome noobery these days.

Also I encourage somebody to correct my math, because after going through all of this I'm actually curious to know the definitive numbers, if nothing else at least just for shits n gigs.

I ended up coming across something called a 'Sidehacked Gekkoscience Antminer S7' but it has made me pretty confused. I have never seen anywhere else what "sidehacked" means and I can't find any mention of it anywhere else. Another thing I'm confused about is the site selling it says it runs at 3.7 TH/s whereas a normal S7 is 4.73 TH/s. Is anyone able to shed some light on this for me?

ICYMI: Another attack on bitcoin coming from Congress (bill would ban "aggregated transactions," attempts to make "concealment" of data a crime, proposes freezing bank accounts, and would require individual users of "digital currencies" to be regulated to the same level as banks).

The whole text of their proposal: http://bit.ly/2igt0Ts

If in the U.S.: Write your representatives to oppose S.1241: http://bit.ly/2zlgcWA

Write to Administration to demand a veto of S.1241 or anything like it if it were ever to reach the White House for signature or veto: http://bit.ly/2igAg1D

An opposition letter to S.1241 has been developed by the Bitcoin Foundation, but I don't think it goes far enough. I think any organizational opposition letter (e.g. from EFF, Bitcoin Foundation, or other org) should call for total and absolute death by fire of S.1241 or anything like it. (See second season of Stranger Things if you have any question about what I mean about death by fire.) http://bit.ly/2yYYKGM

(The following is my recent letter over the weekend sent to the U.S. Administration regarding S.1241, requesting that a position be taken on the bill to announce that a veto would be provided if the legislation were to be advanced. Please feel free to copy and paste from it or develop your own.)

This is regarding S.1241 - the so-called "Combating Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing, and Counterfeiting Act of 2017."

This proposal is a sick joke. Its proponents have given a fancy name to something that simply put, is designed to attack the American worker and would do absolutely zero in relation to what the title implies.

The bill would brings cryptocurrencies under the umbrella of civil forfeiture. It also would require the DHS to provide, within 18 months of ratification, a report on strategies to detect cryptocurrencies at border crossings, which would be impossible since there is no technology that can do that.

I can put a bitcoin on a paper wallet or memorize seed words in my brain that represent a whole wallet and cross borders physically or virtually, then later reproducing the wallet at will. This law would attempt to prohibit me from exercising my memory to access my resources across borders, a ridiculous approach to finance. Finance is of course cross-border and private.

Section 13 of the proposed Act is just one particularly vicious aspect of it, constituting nothing less than an attack upon the American worker.

Sec. 13 of S.1241 seeks to define anyone issuing, redeeming, or cashing bitcoin as a financial institution, requiring them to comply with the Bank Secrecy Act, 31 U.S.C. §5312 and requiring INDIVIDUALS AND SMALL BUSINESSES to adopt the same formal reporting procedures as financial institutions for the purpose of reporting suspicious financial transactions.

In effect this Act would treat INDIVIDUALS as though they were BANKS and impose the same financial licensing and reporting obligations on them.

Please communicate to those who are pushing S.1241 forward that it will get nothing but a Veto.

Thank you.

R9 390 8GB vs. RX 580 4GB

Noob at mining here. Just started running NiceHash on my home gaming computer for the heck of it, and inquired to a more experienced friend how I can get into mining on a budget. He sent me a handful of parts to start a rig, which included using RX 580 4GB graphics card as a starter (just a single for now) which was on eBay for around $260. Somehow I ended up deciding that I was making a hell of a deal on an R9 390 8GB for $244 shipped from eBay and bought that. Very shortly afterwards he told me I was a dummy and that I should have stuck w/ the 580 because it was a better card for only a couple bucks more. I tried to cancel the 390 order, but as figured the eBay seller sent it this afternoon without a response to my cancellation inquiry. What's your advice on what i should do w/ the 390? I can possibly just re-list it on eBay and more or less get my cash back or maybe even a couple bucks more, or should I keep it and start mining? Perhaps I can dial back some settings to ease up the power consumption? Thanks a lot guys!

The whole text of their proposal: http://bit.ly/2gWGDdY in the U.S.: Write your representatives to oppose S.1241: http://bit.ly/2yY5XHi to Administration to demand a veto of S.1241 or anything like it if it were ever to reach the White House for signature or veto: http://bit.ly/2gWE5wf opposition letter to S.1241 has been developed by the Bitcoin Foundation, but I don't think it goes far enough. I think any organizational opposition letter (e.g. from EFF, Bitcoin Foundation, or other org) should call for total and absolute death by fire of S.1241 or anything like it. (See second season of Stranger Things if you have any question about what I mean about death by fire.) http://bit.ly/2yYYKGM(The following is my recent letter over the weekend sent to the U.S. Administration regarding S.1241, requesting that a position be taken on the bill to announce that a veto would be provided if the legislation were to be advanced. Please feel free to copy and paste from it or develop your own.)This is regarding S.1241 - the so-called "Combating Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing, and Counterfeiting Act of 2017."This proposal is a sick joke. Its proponents have given a fancy name to something that simply put, is designed to attack the American worker and would do absolutely zero in relation to what the title implies. The bill would brings cryptocurrencies under the umbrella of civil forfeiture. It also would require the DHS to provide, within 18 months of ratification, a report on strategies to detect cryptocurrencies at border crossings, which would be impossible since there is no technology that can do that.I can put a bitcoin on a paper wallet or memorize seed words in my brain that represent a whole wallet and cross borders physically or virtually, then later reproducing the wallet at will. This law would attempt to prohibit me from exercising my memory to access my resources across borders, a ridiculous approach to finance. Finance is of course cross-border and private.Section 13 of the proposed Act is just one particularly vicious aspect of it, constituting nothing less than an attack upon the American worker.Sec. Please communicate to those who are pushing S.1241 forward that it will get nothing but a Veto.Thank you. via /r/Bitcoin http://bit.ly/2gWrh9g

Newbie Miner- Advice?

Hey guys, how’s it going?

I’ve been working with crypto for a bit. Just small investing and trading. Nothing extensive.

I’m looking to get my feet wet with mining, but I’m not too sure of where to start.

Can you guys recommend me some good software to get Going? I realize I’m not gonna be rich overnight. But a start is a start.

Thanks in advance, guys. :)

My friends' brother is about to spend ~$6k on mining equipment, bad idea?

So my friends brother (16 or 17 yrs old and no job) is gonna take a $6k loan from someone else and spend it on mining equipment (probably 3 s9's). I'm thinking that this is probably a bad idea especially since he doesn't have any money to begin with but he's saying stuff like I already did all the math and it's gonna get 45TH/s and its gonna be super profitable. I know that it is profitable right now but won't the difficulty go up as time goes on and what if the value of Bitcoin falls a lot? He also hasn't told his parents yet and I'm thinking that'll be a HUGE issue when the first power bill comes (and he either gets shut down or has to start paying for power)

What do you guys think?

EDIT: word

People just don't get the hodl mentality.

Whenever someone is first getting into cryptos and asks me how/where to buy bitcoin, without even looking at current events/market situation, I tell them to hold on. Not holding as in "hodl", but holding themselves to make impulsive decisions based on current events. The reason I have held bitcoins for so long is safety, peacefulness and inertia. I know many of the people wants to be active, they want to be trading and get rich but you have no advantage in crypto market over fiat market exchanges. Also getting in with all of your money is a terrible idea that will get you panicked in any of the down swings which will make you "move". Which is against the inertia concept. Those coins to me are meant to sit there. I know a lot of people are working on small transactions with bitcoin but currently I cannot care less.I live in a country where things are not as good as developed countries. Right now I am as safe as I ever could be in anywhere in the world, but I cannot count on that forever. Bitcoin gives me the safety of crossing the borders with only a few words in my mind or encrypted into my dresses. That is why it is a bad idea to have impulsive reactions on news like "bitcoin is gonna be 100 000". It is fine. It can be or it cannot be. You are not missing any train. If you have any form of money, just feel good that you can now keep it in your mind. Safe and sound. via /r/Bitcoin http://bit.ly/2yXLfHu

WTB (UK only) - broken S9 miner

Hello I’m looking to buy a broken s9 miner. Doesn’t matter what the damage is as long as the internal boards aren’t cracked. No intention of repairing it, just want to take it apart to see if I can create a water cooling block.

Ideally looking for someone in the UK or Europe as the postage will be much lower.

Thank you.

Nice Hash Pool Downtime?

Do the pool sites have Downtime because I've been getting a socket closed error for the last hour? I know it is not the Internet connection on my end.

My Bitcoin investment strategy: Each time someone I meet talks shit about Bitcoin, I buy more.

I went to a friend's Halloween party last night. Someone (not me) brought up bitcoin. Another person, a CPA, started talking shit, saying Bitcoin is a bubble and that it's not real money. Basically parroting all the crap you hear in the media. I refrained from getting much involved in the conversation, I just shrugging and said, "oh, okay." While they were discussing Bitcoin I quietly opened the Coinbase app on my phone and bought some more bitcoin.
