/r/Bitcoin FAQ - Newcomers please read

Welcome to the /r/Bitcoin Sticky FAQYou've probably been hearing a lot about Bitcoin recently and are wondering what's the big deal? Most of your questions should be answered by the resources below but if you have additional questions feel free to ask them in the comments. The following videos are a good starting point for understanding how bitcoin works and a little about its long term potential:Video 1: What Is Bitcoin & Why Should You Care?Video 2: The real value of bitcoin and crypto currency technologyVideo 3: Bitcoin Is Independent MoneyVideo 4: Bitcoin 101 - Balaji SrinivasanFor lots of additional video resources check out the videos wiki page or /r/BitcoinTV.Key properties of bitcoinLimited Supply (there will only ever be 21,000,000 bitcoins created and they are issued in a predictable fashion, you can view the inflation schedule here)Open source (You can read the source code yourself here)Decentralized (Bitcoin is globally distributed across thousands of nodes and as such can't be shut down similar to how Bittorrent works)Permissionless (No one can prevent you from interacting with the bitcoin network of your own free will, even in areas currently unserved by traditional banking. This makes it a truly global payment platform)Censorship resistant (No one can censor or block transactions that they disagree with, see Operation Chokepoint)Push system (there are no chargebacks in bitcoin because only the person who owns the address where the bitcoins reside has the authority to move them)Designed to fit all the fundamental properties of money better than gold or fiatAdditional Bitcoin statistics can be found here. Developer resources can be found here and here. Peer-reviewed research papers can be found here. Scaling resources here, and of course the whitepaper that started it all :Where can I buy bitcoins? You can buy or sell any amount of bitcoin and there are several easy methods to purchase bitcoin with cash, credit card or bank transfer. Some of the more popular resources are below, additionally BuyBitcoinWorldwide.com is a very helpful site for beginners.CoinbaseLocalBitcoinsLibertyXMycelium LocalTraderBitfinexBitstampKrakenHere is a listing of local ATMs. If you would like your paycheck automatically converted to bitcoin use Cashila or Bitwage.Note: Bitcoins are valued at whatever market price people are willing to pay for them in balancing act of supply vs demand. Unlike traditional markets, bitcoin markets operate 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Preev.com is a useful site that that shows how much various denominations of bitcoin are worth in different currencies. Alternatively you can just Google "1 bitcoin in (your local currency)".Securing your bitcoinsWith bitcoin you can "be your own bank" and personally secure your bitcoins OR you can use third party companies aka "bitcoin banks" which will hold the bitcoins for you.If you prefer to "be your own bank" and have direct control over your coins without having to use a trusted third party, there are many software wallet options here. If you prefer easy and secure storage without having to learn computer security best practices, then a hardware wallet such as the Trezor or Ledger is recommended. A more advanced option is to secure them yourself using paper wallets generated offline. If you prefer to let bitcoin banks manage your coins, try Coinbase or Circle but be aware you may not be in control of your private keys in which case you would have to ask permission to access your funds and be exposed to third party risk.Note: For increased security, use Two Factor Authentication (2FA) everywhere it is offered, including email!2FA requires a second confirmation code to access your account, usually from a text message or app, making it much harder for thieves to gain access. Google Authenticator and Authy are the two most popular 2FA services, download links are below. Make sure you create backups of your 2FA codes.Google AuthAuthyAndroidAndroidiOSiOSWhere can I spend bitcoins?Comprehensive lists can be found at the Trade FAQ or The Bitcoin Directory, some more commons ones are below.StoreProductSteam, HumbleBundle, GreenmanGaming, and Coinplay.ioFor when you need to get your game onMicrosoftXbox games, phone apps and softwareSpendabit, The Bitcoin Shop, Overstock, Rakuten, DuoSearch and BazaarBayRetail shopping with millions of resultsShakePayGenerate one time use Visa cards in secondsGyftGift cards for hundreds of retailers including Amazon, Target, Walmart, Starbucks, Whole Foods, CVS, Lowes, Home Depot, iTunes, Best Buy, Sears, Kohls, eBay, GameStop, etc.NewEgg, TigerDirect and DellFor all your electronic needsCashila, Bitwa.la, Coinbills, Piixpay, Bitbill.eu, Bylls, Coins.ph, Bitrefill, Pey.de, LRoS, Wagepoint, Hyphen.toBill paymentFoodler and TakeawayTakeout delivered to your door!Expedia, Cheapair, Lot, Destinia, BTCTrip, Abitsky, SkyTours, Fluege the Travel category on Gyft and 9flatsFor when you need to get awayBoltVMVPS serviceCryptostorm, Mullvad, and PIAVPN servicesNamecheapFor new domain name registrationStampnik and GetUSPSDiscounted USPS Priority, Express, First-Class mail postageReddit GoldPremium membership which can be gifted to othersCoinmap and AirBitz are helpful to find local businesses accepting bitcoins. [Help] I want to get into Bit Coin Mining

So I get free electricity on Saturdays so I figured if I mine only on Saturdays I could easily start to make a profit. The problem is I don't really know how to get CGMiner to work. I already have an account in slush's pool with some workers and have a Bit Coin wallet setup. I'm having problems setting up a batch file for CGMiner with my current setup: GPU: http://bit.ly/2hWGUZt It's a 2 in 1 GPU so how would I setup CGMiner to work with both? Also how can I set a thermal limit so my hardware doesn't get destroyed.. Any advice/recommendations are appreciated Thanks :)

I contacted my community college and asked if they would offer a course on Bitcoin. They asked if I would teach it. My local community college is offering a short class on Bitcoin and I'd like to share some of the information on Bitcoin I gathered to teach it.

To teach the class I wrote down everything at all I'd ever though I'd heard about with Bitcoin and then looked each item up.
If you've ever been down a wiki-hole you know how information hunting can end up.

So I have a lot of info I gathered so that the class can focus on fun things and the students can get a glimpse at some of the things they didn't know they don't know about.

I'd like to share that information with you!

1.0 Introduction Lecture Info

2.0 Bitcoin the system vs bitcoin the token

3.1 a history of money

3.1b the history of relevant technology before btc.

3.2a history genesis block through 2014

3.2b 2015-now

4.1A Satoshi Nakamoto & people

4.1b Companies

4.1c Use, wallet, misc

4.2a Media coverage

4.2b Regulation

5.1 R&D

5.2 Beyond Bitcoin

More sources there are some 'security' things in the sources list that just are not in the scope of the class but people might find interesting (I did).

& a post on Problems with common methods of cold storage

At my community college in Portland Oregon, PCC.EDU, I have taught this course twice before and we are offering it Winter term (next 2 months), if you know anyone in Portland who wants to learn about this in a group setting.
The course will be focusing more on how to use btc rather than all the info mentioned above though. Link

Satoshi's lesson

Bitcoin 0.1 was amazingly complete. It had few bugs, and even fewer really bad bugs. Additionally, it had great forward-compatibility, with explicit support for future softforks in the form of the OP_NOPn opcodes. Before anyone knew how a decentralized cryptocurrency would even work, Satoshi was figuring out how to add to Bitcoin things like smart contracts and payment channels. This is incredible, and a lot of people look at Satoshi's amazing accomplishments with Bitcoin and say stuff like, "Satoshi must be a crypto super-genius, the next Einstein." This, I think, is very much missing the point.

When Satoshi was working on Bitcoin in 2007-2009, almost all of the core ideas of Bitcoin were well-known in the cryptography community. In 1996, a summary of previous academic work on electronic cash was published, talking at length about most of the low-level cryptographic primitives used in Bitcoin and using familiar terms like "double spending". Hashcash proof-of-work was well-known, and I remember reading about it prior to Bitcoin as an idea to prevent email spam. git uses the same unbreakable chain of hashes as Bitcoin's block chain, and was first released in 2005. Satoshi made one major leap: combining all these pieces to prevent double spending through a PoW block chain. This was impressive, but the same flash of brilliance could've happened to anyone who was following this stuff.

Satoshi is not awesome because he was watching the crypto world and had a brilliant idea. He's awesome because upon having this idea, he carried it out. You know what I would've done if this idea had come to me? I probably would've mentioned it to a few people, maybe written some very basic code if I was feeling especially ambitious. You know what Satoshi did? He spent 2+ years contemplating every possible aspect of the system he could think of, and wrote code that worked brilliantly in the real world. Satoshi's code was good, but anyone who had read a good book like C++ Primer could've written similarly-good code. Anyone who had taken an intro crypto course or read a few books on the subject would understand Satoshi's usage of crypto primitives. The task of creating Bitcoin required a small flash of brilliance, moderate skill, and an unbelievably huge amount of dedication to thinking about, coding, and testing the system until it worked exactly as envisioned.

Satoshi's lesson is that you don't need to be the next Einstein in order to change the world. You just need to be put in the effort. Satoshi, probably just an ordinary hobbyist like anyone here, saw that something was lacking in the Universe, and he fought tooth-and-nail for 2+ years until this imperfection was corrected. We should strive to do the same (and not just in Bitcoin).

Are there any not-energy efficient but very powerful miners? Also are there general manuals for mining or they depend of the miner?

First I was looking for manuals before buying an S9 miner with pals to begin with mining the next year, I already know the basics (difficulty, energy, etc.), but I don't know other (the strictly technical things like the power configuration and so on), so I was wondering if I needed some PDF manual or something or the user's manual with de S9 antminer is enough.

Also I was wondering if there are other miners that are better for me instead of the S9. Because as far as I know, the Antminer miners care for being ''energy-efficient'', but all I want is power and durability because I don't care about the energy waste because it doesn't run by my pocket (not thieving lol, it's just that in my country the energy is practically free), so any suggestions of better miners for my conditions? Thanks!

Next Antminer S9 Batch?

Any guesses on the first release date of S9s in 2017? Looks like they're done for 2016.

Getting into Mining

So I don't pay for electricity currently and have some money to invest in mining. So where should I start is my main question? What kind of miners are great to start with? Ive seen some great Antminers online for good prices around 4.7 Th/s was wondering can I start with one and work from there? Anything more efficient? Also I might have the potential so make miners for cheaper then buying one? Any guides on making them?

Anyone in San Jose, CA? I have 3 Antminer S3s sitting on a shelf gathering dust if you want them.

Apologies to the mods if this is not the correct area for this post. This isn't a sale offer. It's an offer for free stuff!

I have 3 Antminer S3s sitting on a shelf gathering dust. I know that one works for sure. The other 2 can likely be brought around to working condition for someone that wants to put the effort into them. I'm also throwing in a single 600W power supply that I have with them as well as a USB UART adaptor in case you really need to dig into the internals to get them working.

I stopped using them long ago when the wife realized what they were doing to our electric bill. :)

Help connecting two miners to a single router

I have had a single antminer s3 running for over a year and have reciently bought another. Where I run into problems is when I try and connect it to any of my workers. When I long on to my router it shows up but when I try and configure it, the ip address doesnt lead anywhere. Is there anything that Im doing wrong or could it be a faulty miner
