Why is a more expensive miner more profitable?

I saw a blog by a dude who claims he is raking in about $700 a month from mining (he claims bitcoins, but I assume altcoins), from a $6000 rig. He got a creditcard, bought some gpu's, a rack and a boxfan amd claims to be making money.

Could this be true? I have tried my hand at mining just for fun, on a linux install with a gtx980tj to mine with, and that came in at a net profit (after power) of around 1,5 cents an hour.

Could someone using a single rig consisting of a dedicated mobo and 8 various gpus mine 700-800 bucks month? Why would this difference be that exponential?
