The Stages of Bitcoin
Stages of Bitcoin:
This is a joke.
What is this?
How does it work?
This will get hacked.
So what?
Oh, neat.
These people are crazy, they are cool.
Let me learn mining.
Who is Satoshi?
This is fun.
Mining sucks, time to focus on something else.
Wow, this tech has some amazing potential.
Oh wait, this is not just a currency but an invention. Wow.
These people are awesome.
Whoa. This is going to completely change the world!
I'm going to be rich!
Not sure if I will be rich. I might be stupid.
I know everything about this tech.
It's all about blockchain! Forget Bitcoin.
We need to decentralize everything.
Wait, it's about Bitcoin also.
Wait, some things don't make sense to decentralize.
These people are crazy, they suck.
I barely know anything about this tech.
Many of these people are awesome.
I have to focus now.

Setting up an AntMiner S7 rig, will this be any good?
want to buy 4 AntMiner S7s which will cost me $2,132. and make them work in a cluster to mine BTC/most profitable coin of the day. It runs at 4.73TH/s each, which means 18.92TH/s when I link them up to a pool. I run 8mbps connection (though that's not important.) I don't have to pay for watts since it's included in the bill for the house.
As of today, 18.92TH/s gets me $24 (0.05325289) daily via BTC and will take me 84 days to break-even. I'm using coinwarz.com for this calculation. Moving over to http://bit.ly/1rHQTGP, it tells me that it will take me 110 days if I started today.
What do you guys think? I'll probably be able have the amount of money for this come summer break (late June/early July.)
In 6 months time, how much money can I expect daily?

I'm ready to provide voluntary technical support to help you setup OpenBazaar Linux (VPS) Server over Skype and Ready to use (turnkey) servers for meal (I charge $1 per setup on any of your server).
Okay, my first attempt failed, because I had some mistake of too much relying on trust model (1st time I thought it would be enough to keep cheap $1 servers in my custody, but Bitcoin users demand to make the whole process of having your OB servers even more transparent).
Most OpenBazaar users start their experience from downloading & running regular OpenBazaar Client / Server on official openbazaar.org web-site and think its enough. But in case if you keep your OpenBazaar Server running on your home desktop computer - its not professional, because if your server down even for 2-3 hours, your customers can't access your OpenBazaar store anymore (and you are loosing sales). That's why most people I know in OpenBazaar space are currently purchasing expensive $10 vps setups. For 21st century, and abundance of web-sites like eBay/Amazon/AliExpress where you can list your product for free - most people don't understand, why they should pay to own a 24/7 store somewhere in yet unpopular but very Bitcoin-targeted space: OpenBazaar markets. Instead of paying $10 to Amazon company, pay me $1, and I will guarantee your technical satisfaction and will save you up at least $7-$8 by offering some better $1/per month VPS solution which will make your OpenBazaar store available 24/7 with the same reliability as you would ordered it on Amazon.
I am myself many years in a hosting business and Linux administration, just thought it could be useful to be here in case if someone is going to setup 24/7 Bitcoin store with OB.
I can offer 2 options:
-
Buy my experience for $1, and get refund if not satisfied. [Trustless - you do everything manually with my guidance and with my patient explaining] Guided setup over Skype shared screen (can be done over chat without microphone/webcam usage): http://bit.ly/1UnFdnp - I already know places where they sell VPS for $1 (you can offer your VPS company), and I will be glad to tell you in chat what button to click if you share your screen - the whole proceedure shouldn't take more than 30 minutes. At the end you will have fully ready OpenBazaar 24/7.
-
Servers for testing purposes under my custody (you have to trust me) http://bit.ly/1r5i65k - I will provide this standard setup for just $1.79 - its good for trying publishing cheap items / testing demand, and other inexpensive transactions. This installation can be purchased in a moderated contract, please visit: ob://1fcb9a8beb32f688fef7b61a52d091b9dd8c1f27/listing/9d959c9d769e4d92cef1424f52dc93eb7bde6b6f (or we could deal in traditional direct way) - Also I you can purchase 12 months of testing and OB store VPS ahead ($1.79x12)-10% off; But I highly recommend starting from $1.79 setups - its better to buy 12 setups, give it to your friends, so that they could have some trading, 24/7 OB selling experience on highly available VPS machines.
In both cases you should know - that you easily can transfer your GUID, followers, products on OpenBazaar from one VPS to another, from my custody to your custody (from your testing machine to your actual controlled exclusively by you setup which guided over Skype for example)
My skype is: reliablesh9t - I will provide an easy way for your grandma to have 24/7 OpenBazaar store, with giving you ability to keep all your keys for your store and will help you to control everything.
3 customers already tried my service (2 of them paid for 12 months), I will ask them to throw a few lines here, just to confirm.

Investing in bitcoin?
So, I put around 5 dollars in bitcoin a few weeks back into my electrum wallet. I used the converter from BTC -> USD and now it says its worth 6.5 USD. Do people do this ever? Like buy low, and wait for it to go back up then cash out? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I'm totally new to cryptocurrency.
Edit: Obviously I didnt just make "bank" by coming up on 1.5$ USD. But I see a lot of potential in this.

Bitcoin noob - Mytrezor.com or Trezor wallet - cannot change the transaction fees (0.0001 BTC)
FWIW, my experience with bitcoin is less than a week. I have a trezor wallet given to me by a friend and I have a minuscule amount of BTC to practice with and get familiarity with the various trappings and nuances of bitcoin magic! :)
I used the MyTrezor.com interface for trezor and I notice that it mandates 0.0001BTC as transaction fee everytime. If I'm transferring something like 0.0001BTC to begin with (since I'm new!) this is 100% transaction fees! :| Any idea how to get around this? Is there an alternative interface to mytrezor.com? I tried beta.mytrezor.com and that doesn't have anything different. Also, this old post suggests lowfees.mytrezor.com but that doesn't seem to work anymore.
I notice that Electrum on Windows allows me to change the transaction fees, but mytrezor is super convenient that I don't have to install anything and can use it on my work laptop as well. Any suggestions?

Recently got into Bitcoin and have some questions about potentially mining
So a month back I got a wallet and some bitcoins to purchase something. Then I got into reading a bit about mining and it seems like a cool idea.
Now I read that if I want to use my PC to mine, it would only be worth it if I paid less than $0.1/kWh or something like that? Honestly, I'm not sure how much I pay per kWh atm but I'll check that out this weekend.
What I found more interesting are the Mining Hardware Solutions. On bitcoinmining.com I found those big guys that are 150-800 bucks and the USB miners for far less. Now, while the SP20 Jackson (150$) mines approximately 0.1593 BTC per month I couldn't find such an estimate for the USB miners. It's probably much less, right? Are the USB ones even worth it then? Also, if I bought the SP20 Jackson for 150$ and got 0.1593BTC/month I would only need like 2 months to get back my investment, right? (minus energy cost). If I bought the AntMiner S7 I would need about 3-4 months to get back my investment but end up mining more after that and it's the most power efficient one of the 3 offered there.
Basically I'm asking for a recommendation. I guess I'd be ok with investing upfront, but in the long run which solution would be most efficient? It's not about how much bitcoins I mine in total, but how big my income-to-invest-ratio is, so if I spend a dollar a month and get 2 dollars a month it's better for me than spending 200 bucks a month and getting 300.
Hope I'm not talking too crazy or stupid and hope someone can help me. Have a great day :)

What are the impacts of Segwits 75% fee discount?
I'm quite concerned about Segwits 75% fee discount because it's complicated to understand the impacts. The impacts I am reading about seem to be quite fundamental changes and therefore very risky from my view. Please help if you can comment or provide further links for reading.
I've looked here:
http://bit.ly/1SCP4kI "It should be noted that although spending more inputs makes the UTXO set smaller in size, it also associates some outputs (addresses) as likely being owned by the same user. So there is a privacy/cost trade off for the user. "
"This is expected to encourage users to favor the use of transactions that minimize impact on the UTXO set in order to minimize fees, and to encourage developers to design smart contracts and new features in a way that will also minimize the impact on the UTXO set."
"Each byte of the witness part of a segregated witness (segwit) transaction will only count as 0.25 bytes towards the size of the transaction. Since transaction fees are based on the size of a transaction, this is effectively a 75% discount on fees for that part of a transaction—but only for people who use segwit."
gavin: "If you have hardware or software that can't produce segwit transactions you will pay higher fees than somebody with newer hardware or software."
jtoomim: "I think the 0.25x byte discounting in SegWit is effectively a subsidy for projects like Lightning and sidechains. Those projects have more complicated signature scripts than typical transactions, so they benefit more from the signature script discount. I don't like that. Lightning and sidechains should compete with on-chain transactions on their merits, not on their subsidies."
ptodd: "> What is the rationale for offering a discount?
UTXO set space is significantly more expensive for the network as all full nodes must keep the entire UTXO set. Additionally, transaction input/output data in general is argued by some to be less expensive than signatures, as you have more options with regard to skipping validation of signatures (e.g. how Bitcoin Core skips validation of signatures prior to checkpoints)."
Questions:
1) Are there other existing services or txs types that will be impacted?
2) Will zero confirmation txs or RBF txs be impacted?
3) Don't Coinjoin txs have a larger UTXO... so will this impact Coinjoin txs fees?
4) Will old standard non-segwit txs be more expensive than standard segwit txs?
5) If the 75% constant turns out to be the wrong number is it easy to change or could it cause further infighting within the community?
6) Can anybody express the economic impacts of the above if any or other impacts they expect as a result?
EDIT: (Thanks for the replies so far I have added a couple more)
7) Why is any fee discount necessary?
8) Would segwit function well without the discount?
Thanks in advance.

Hi, I just want to introduce my Openbazaar store here just once. I believe I offer an interesting service.
I have a store called ChinaNumbaOne on Openbazaar. My store id is a930c023c05be077f2bdb56b68f91ba68f4aa5df.
I currently reside in China and have been here for almost two years. I offer a service where you can send me a link of a product on Amazon or Ebay and I will try to find the factory here that makes it (or similar product) to get the very best price. I can usually locate it on 1688.com or otherwise I ask my Chinese partner (a talented sourcing agent) to search for it. I must add that alibaba.com is really different to 1688.com and there is usually a discrepancy in the prices.
Once we find the factory, I order a sample, we discuss it and I can send it to you. Together we select a moderator. I list the product on my OB store at a price that we both agree on (usually bulk orders) and then you can place your order.
I believe this service is really valuable as you don't have to trust us, you only have to trust the moderator. Saying that, I obviously want to deliver the best possible service. We act as a bridge between east and west, where there is often quite a bit of communication and trust issues.
I have a connection with an established company here that ships products off Taobao, Alibaba and T-mall to Chinese expats all over the world. We do our shipping through them and they make sure the shipment will go through Chinese customs.
We can also order any product for you from the above mentioned companies.
At the moment my Openbazaar store is a bit messy because the software doesn't have categorization right now but there are some interesting things to look at.
Please feel free to chat with me via OB chat, chinanumba1@protonmail.com and @chinanumba111 on twitter.
I will not spam this subreddit again with advertisement but I thought some of you might be interested in the service.
