I run a high-volume Bitcoin brokerage in Montreal, Canada and I've been getting a few clients recently that share the same characteristics:1) They want 1 BTC or 2 BTC flat. 2) It's their first time buying Bitcoin and don't know how it works. 3) They don't want the payment to be traced by to their bank or credit card statement 4) They are visibly nervous 5) They are under a tight deadline 6) They want to know how the receiver of the funds will be able to tell that the funds came from them and not someone else. These are all visible signs of someone being blackmailed by a scammer that has found their email in the Ashley Madison dump and is threatening them to tell their Facebook friends / family and friends about it.I've seen the same scam twice coming from @aol email addresses. There are many reasons why someone should not pay: - They claim in the email to generate a unique address for each person, but blockchain investigation reveals that they are collecting numerous payments for each address they give. - They do not give instructions on how to prove that you paid - They send out each email to multiple recipients - They claim to have "found the Facebook profile", but one client's Facebook profile was not public and not findable with the email address. - We should not incentive blackmailers to go on with thus predatory behaviorAbove all else: do NOT tell people to reply to the blackmailer for further instructions. This will only put the victim on the blackmailer's radar, at which time they will have the incentive to actually go and find his Facebook profile or other info.Resist the temptation to make money from these poor people. They are freaking out and some are ready to pay large amounts just in case there is a 1% chance that their info will not be leaker. There isin't even 1% chance that this scam can work. This information will be public forever and the blackmail will keep on coming. Don't encourage blackmail.TL;DR As Bitcoin brokers, I think we should advise victims of Ashley Madison blackmail not to pay the ransom via /r/Bitcoin http://bit.ly/1QOhbgs
